Week 9 Magazine Cover

Magazine Cover

The media persuasion techniques that I used on my cover included mainly grammatical techniques. Since the cover was based on the common core and acquiring information about the core I chose to add minor sentences that discussed the information "within" the magazine while creating an air of mystery and illusion. I also included exclamation statements on my magazine cover as they are exaggerated statements that use exclamation points for emphasis. I chose the statements for my cover based on personal concern about the Common Core and how it will affect me professionally and my children and students academically.

I chose to make my magazine cover a "Special Edition" to emphasize the importance of parents and teachers understanding what the Common Core is all about. The font for the month and price is smaller indicating that those two things are of little importance. The bold black font on each of the article "titles" indicate that these are important items to be read. I also included a scan barcode and a QAR code since all magazines have these.

  1. Great job on your cover! I liked the addition of the QR code.

Visually I notice the title, “West Virginia Educator” which indicates that the publication’s intended audience is West Virginians in the field of academia; the “Special Edition” subtitle indicates that the edition will probably focus on a specific topic. Additional text supports that; “Ready, Set, Go! The Common Core Initiative; Learn More!!”, “Key Ideas for Parents. Gaining Support for the Common Core”, and “Parental Concerns about Common Core Unwrapped!” There is the addition of a QR Code to indicate supplement information. Images include an “A+” Stamp, which was used to apply a red stamp onto ruled paper.

All of the text included indicates that the Common Core is, or can be, a positive change. The stamp conveys the message that the implementation of the standards will result in higher grades. However, to be successful, there is the indication that educators need to address the concerns of the parents as well as garner their support.

  2. I liked the way you styled your cover, which made the instant connection to a teacher. The "Ready, Set, Go" made an instant connection to the RTT Plan currently being implemented by the currrent Presidential Adminstration. The A+ seems to reinforce the endorsement of the Common Core Standards by the Magazine. This work is well designed, good job!
